Monthly General Meetings: 2018


All meetings in 2018 are held at the Livermore Public Library on the first Monday of each month except for January, July, September and December. The meetings run from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Guest speakers are invited to present in his/her area of mental health expertise to the general public. There is no cost and is open to the public.

HOUSING UPDATES IN ALAMEDA COUNTY
Robert Ratner, MPH, MD
Housing Services Director
Alameda County Behavioral Health Care Services

Robert Ratner, M.D., MPH will share information about the state of affordable housing in California and new housing resources and services within Alameda County.

Since 2007, Dr. Ratner has overseen the expansion and improvement in housing resources and associated supportive services for individuals served in a public behavioral health system. His major responsibilities include the management of a $20 million housing development fund, an $8.1 million capital development fund, homeless prevention and emergency housing resources, housing first program models, representing behavioral health services in the countywide plan to end homelessness, increasing partnerships with primary care partners, health plans, and other stakeholders.

ADVOCACY SERVICES IN ALAMEDA COUNTY
Beverly Bergman

Family Caregiver Advocacy Specialist
Beverly Bergman is a 20-year staff member of the Mental Health Association in Alameda County. Her expertise as benefits advocate for 12 years successfully helped over 500 people receive SSI/SSDI. The past 8 years, Beverly has advocated for family/caregivers by providing support, advice, education, advocacy, information and referrals. Beverly guides families through dispute resolutions and assists with filing complaints. Other services include help with completing forms, explanation how the Alameda County mental health system works and strategies when the system doesn’t work. Beverly has a family member with a mental illness and understands first hand the challenges in obtaining help for a loved one while maintaining the health of the family/caregiver.

Patients' Rights Director for Alameda and San Mateo Counties
Francesca Tenenbaum is Director of Patients' Rights Advocates Programs for Alameda County and San Mateo County. She has
21 years of experience in advocacy and has been a Patients' Rights Advocate for over 14 years. Currently there are 10 advocates in Alameda County and 3 advocates in San Mateo.

Youth & Family Services, Horizons Family Counseling
Horizons Family Counseling, a division of the Livermore Police Department, addresses the mental health needs and strengthens the relationships of youth and families in the Livermore and Tri-Valley area by providing effective, strength-based, counseling programs and services.  Horizons partners with the City, community organizations, police, and school districts to provide innovative and exceptional service to help create solutions to the challenging problems facing families today.

Lynn Gardner is the Program Manager at Horizons Family Counseling. Lynn graduated from California State University, Hayward in 2004 with an emphasis in Marriage and Family Therapy. She also received a certificate in Child & Adolescent Therapy.

Jennifer Thaete, a Certified Legal Specialist in Estate Planning, Trust and Probate Law, is the owner of Law Office of Jennifer Thaete, PC.   She has been practicing in this area of the law for over 16 years.

Ms. Thaete will cover the importance of proper estate planning – including the use of Special Needs Trusts to protect your loved ones. She will discuss how to provide for beneficiaries who may be receiving needs based benefits in a way to avoid or minimize the loss of benefits.  She will begin with the importance of estate planning in general and will have a brief over-view of the various types of special needs trusts.

AN OVERVIEW OF THE MENTAL HEALTH PROGRAM AT SANTA RITA JAIL
Yvonne Jones, LCSW
Director, Alameda County Adult Forensic Behavioral Health/Conditional Release Program

Yvonne Jones, LCSW is the director of Adult Forensic Behavioral Health (AFBH)/Conditional Release Program (CONREP) and the Court mental health programs, (Court Advocacy Program and Behavioral Health Court). She has been working in the Criminal Justice system for over 28 years primarily in mental health. Yvonne started as a clinician in mental health at Santa Rita Jail in 1994 and worked there providing clinical assessments, intakes and crisis intervention until 2001. At that time she moved to the CONREP as a case manager, working closely with Millie Swafford the former director of AFBH, and in 2004 became the CONREP program supervisor.

In November of 2013 Yvonne was appointed as the director of CJMH/CONREP. Prior to her work in Alameda County she worked in the County Jail in Santa Clara County in Substance Recovery/Re-Entry programs. She has many years of providing direct services to the mentally ill in correctional facilities, working closely with the court systems and the State Hospitals.

Psychiatrist Daniel J. Kostalnick, M.D., presents an overview of
psychopharmacology and Ask the Doc question and answer.
Dr. Kostalnick is a highly regarded Board Certified Psychiatrist by the
American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology with extensive training and
expertise in psychopharmacology and psychotherapy. His practice is in
Pleasanton and he treats children, adolescents, and adult patients and
families.
